Customers often ask, “When is the best time of the year to prune a tree?" Typically, the best time of the year to perform major trimming or pruning occurs during the trees' dormancy period. In Colorado this time frame begins in mid to late October when the leaves fall and continues through February or March when trees begin to grow again. However, routine pruning to remove weak, diseased, or dead limbs can be accomplished at any time during the year with minimal effect on the tree. Pruning during dormancy helps reduce the risk of insect infestation and fungus. It also helps reduce the amount of sap loss which in turn minimizes stress placed on the tree.
